Burger King, Chandlers Wharf, Stockton-on-Tees

This commercial development at Chandlers Wharf involved the construction of a new drive-through restaurant, together with the associated access routes, external works and utility infrastructure.

The 22-week construction programme commenced in February 2001 and covered the complete building shell and supporting site works. The scope included site clearance, reduced-level excavation, reinforced concrete floor construction, structural steelwork, masonry, timber roof structures, pitched and flat roof coverings, architectural glazing and automatic entrance doors.

Specialist drive-through elements included bespoke serving-bay windows, ordering and detector-loop infrastructure, signage foundations, illuminated-sign ducts, a CCTV tower and purpose-designed service points. The external works incorporated drainage, kerbing, paving, road surfacing, line markings, traffic-island alterations, landscaping and a dedicated refuse compound.

The project also required comprehensive foul and surface-water drainage, including a grease trap, trapped floor gullies and connections serving the commercial kitchen. Incoming gas, electricity and water services were coordinated and installed as part of the works.

A series of evolving operational and tenant requirements were successfully incorporated during construction, including revised internal layouts, enhanced drive-through windows, additional roof-plant supports, upgraded insulation and alterations to the restaurant’s service infrastructure.

The completed project demonstrates MLC’s longstanding experience in delivering technically coordinated restaurant and drive-through developments, combining the main building works with the specialist infrastructure, servicing and external environment required for a successful commercial operation.
